The California sea bass has an elongated and flattened body, slightly spindle shaped, and an elliptical cross-section. The ratio of body height to body length is 1:3.5-4.2, and the ratio of head length to body length is 1:3.2-3.4. The head is large and long. Big eyes, protruding eyeballs. The kiss is long, the mouth is raised, and the slit is large and wide. The jawbone, palatine bone, and plow bone all have complete comb like teeth, which are numerous and small in size. Thick back flesh. The tail handle is long and high. The whole body is covered with gray silver white or light yellow fine scales, but the color of the spine line is darker, often green blue or light black, and there are often black spots near the lateral line.
