Iwahara carp has a thick body, small body cavity, tender meat, delicious taste, few muscle spines, high meat content, and rich nutrition. It contains 16 grams of protein, 4.5 grams of fat, and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and iron per 100 grams of meat, and is particularly popular among consumers. It is a premium and valuable edible economic fish.
Due to environmental pollution in rivers and the obstruction of water conservancy facilities between rivers and lakes, the ecological environment of fish has been adversely affected. Natural water bodies have suffered from long-term overfishing and severe depletion of resources, and the rock carp is basically on the brink of extinction in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and its tributaries. It has been listed as a national vulnerable species and is a superior economic fish. The yield per mu can reach 350 kilograms, and the output value per mu is around 70000 yuan. It is an important economic fish species for modern fisheries to shift from quantity based to quality based. It is mainly distributed in the water bodies of the main and tributary basins of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River (above the Three Gorges), with a small amount of distribution in rivers such as Jialing River, Minjiang River, Tuojiang River, Qujiang River, Youshui River, Chishui River, and the middle and lower reaches of Jinsha River.
The individual size of Yanyuan carp is large, with a maximum weight of 5 kilograms. Its growth rate is average, and it feeds on meat with a wide range of sources, making it suitable for breeding in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, and intensive areas in most parts of China due to its high utilization rate of artificial compound feed, low disease incidence, and wide adaptability. China has successfully carried out research on artificial breeding and breeding techniques for rock carp. Due to its promising market prospects and high economic benefits, it can become a valuable freshwater fish species for artificial breeding.
